Cricket started to be played in numerous counties throughout England and also at schools and it was in the mid to late 1600’s that the first signs of gambling at cricket appeared. Indeed, many large bets were thought to have taken place which resulted in the parliament at the time placing a restriction in the form of the Gaming Act of 1664[A], which limited betting stakes to £100. It is very easy to dismiss this figure as being small but back in the 1600’s this amount of money was equivalent to £13,000 in today’s money and just goes to show the amount of money that was being gambled on the outcome of cricket matches, even back then.

The First “Great Match” of 1967 and “International Match” of 1844

It was in 1697 that the first ‘great match’ was recorded, featuring 11 players in each team like the sport of cricket we see today and this match also involved money exchanging hands in the way of betting. This betting took place between the two teams playing the match as well as the people watching. Despite this, it was not until 1744 that the first laws of the game were written[B] and accepted and new ones were introduced periodically. At this time, the newspapers were reporting more on the betting aspects of cricket than the actual sport itself.
